  1. GRANDPA START FAMILY SALT WORKS

One day French colonel which was in charge of provisions for a soldiers and laborers come to Grandpa and ask? "Sir where we can acquire large amounts of salt? We do not have enough salt for proper nutrition and people getting sick"

Grandpa, raise his eyes from the drawing he have in front of him and start to wonder if this Colonel playing stupid or stupid he really is. On the coast of Adriatic Sea for a Centuries, salt manufacturing was normal thing since Roman times and most of villagers will cook salt for themselves. Making sure to he have understand correctly and to Colonel do not play the games with him, he answered: "Sir, what amount of sale we talking about?"

Colonel check his books and adjutant handle him some papers. The Ministry of Military affairs have need of twenty tons of salt annually in different sizes and for a different use. From animal feed to a human kitchen.

Also, he added to French Government willing to pay for a such production which will make sure to French and laborers never get short on salt supply again.

Grandpa was stunned, Million different thoughts was roaming through his brain. Who in his right mind will pay for a something what is so abundant in mother nature. Sea was there, all French's have to do is take big pots, and pour Sea water inside and fire up, and cook and cook until enough salt was in the pot. Or, send the carts to a Solin where salt

factory was producing salt since Romans. Well, lets play the game he said to himself. "Sir, Colonel, Sir, if I find the way to produce salt will you help me in establishing it?"

Now Colonel look puzzled. This big Dalmatian have something on his mind. Military technicians was brainstorming about salt production for a months and did not come with relevant plan. Now after single question, this Dalmatian Merde (Shit) may have an answer right from his sleeve. He better be careful, if he do not play this hand properly his golden epaulettes may never some. He was hopping to become a general. So carefully not to offer to much, he said: "Well Sir, I can contact the Command and ask them if they have any plans for that, but what is it what you will need? Can you make some projection and put on papers to I can submit to my superiors?"

Grandpa look at him hard and read him advance. If I give to him what he need and make calculations, he will go to Headquarters and submit this as his own plan. So he decide to play dummy. Carefully not to turn the Colonel's attention to a plans he was just moment before reading he turn around and said: "Sir, Colonel, Sir, how poor peasant as me can submit something on paper when I have never being in the school? But if you let me work on it, and give to me what I ask you for I am sure to you will be satisfied, and we will have enough salt".

He did not told the Colonel to he is the Church graduate, and only his duty toward the

family have stop him to pursue further education. He probably knew more about science than Colonel.

And so Colonel went back to Headquarters and told them what Grandpa have told him. Approval was given for a necessary material and labor and whatever was needed. With that, Colonel come back and issue order to Grandpa start and organize salt manufacturing on spot. With Colonel in his pocket, Grandpa start sending the messengers to Rovanjska to organize firewood collection, building for permanent posts for a giant pots in which Sea water will be cooked, and order to a blacksmith to start black smiting of two thousand liters pot. In the same time he put all the people on French pay role. He also send his youngest grandson to a Velebit in order to deliver the message to Filip. Filip was ordered to go across the St. Bordo in Lika and buy hire or any other way secure enough horses, mules and donkeys to arrange for a flow of firewood from Velebit to a Rovanjska coast where salt will be cooked. Also he secured the funds for a pay of Lika workers.

The Colonel was coming around on his mare every day to inspect what's going on, and dutifully was filling up requests for this and that. One the end of the week all workers will line up in front of his tent and receive pay. For a times when most of a trade was done by exchange of goods, Grandpa's family have source of almost unlimited fund I gold. Everybody was hired kids, children, woman, horses, donkeys, mules. French was to pay

per load of firewood, daily wages for all laborers, animals, and on the end they will pay for a salt. Grandpa have set the first family business and he intended to make most of it.

Colonel most of the time did not understand logistics of salt manufacturing but, he have seen to Grandpa have all under control and on the end of the first month he will just show up with pay role and make report to headquarters. It was to his convenience to he can stay in camp with all benefits of it, than try to run every day business in some lost Dalmatian village, where people do not have manners, toilet was unheard of, table utensils, decent cheese, cognac, champagne, court and dances. He did not like Dalmatians, he did not like them even more because they was natural, did not have high manners, and will tell you off, if they did not think to you are right. But French's was ALWAYS right, so Colonel was caught in between Fire and frying pan. He need Dalmatian Merde (Shit) how he call them for him self, to get job done, and on the other side was not able to achieve his goal in advancement in ranks, if Dalmatians did not do what he suppose to do. So Colonel did not like the people, he did not like what he must to do where he must to spend his time, and on the end there was no woman refined enough for courtship. He have find few good looking, but on his advances they will just raise they head, smile politely, turn away and let him talk with man they was always with. One day he turn to Grandpa and ask him why is woman that way in Dalmacija, Answer was so simple to Colonel did not have nothing to said. He

was told to woman in Dalmacija have they own mind, they know for a simple reasoning, they knew difference between good and bad, and most important they did not like flirt for a pleasure of it. If Colonel wanted woman in Dalmacija he will have to marry one after long courtship in presence of a chaperons, or prove by his work to he is worth of her attention. One of the older woman told him not too long ago, to his hands is clean and soft so he must not be a hard worker. The other one to whom he brought bouquet of flowers have laugh at him so hard, to tears start running down her face. That was something unheard of, this crazy French must to be out of his mind. What in god's name one will do with flowers in the heat of the day, they was good only to put them on the grave of loved one.

When she sow the eyes of the French officer, she try to explain him to will be much more appreciated if he get off his horse, take his fancy jacket off, and help her to put pair of Vucija (specially shaped barrels for potable water) on cargo saddle of her donkey. When he did not understand or he pretend not to understand she simply did it herself and down the path she go. This make him even more furious. She did this with so much easy, and each Vucija was at least of 60 kilograms. He knew to he will need all him might if he wanted to do that. And that what make him more mad at this unbelievable man and woman. They was so independent, so proud, full of self esteem, and they even have not been conscious about. They had just natural. Sometime at Sundays, when after mass they will dance, or

throw the boulder from the shoulder, many French soldiers attempted and have fun. Most of the time they will win the target throwing, but in free stile wrestling, boulder from the shoulder, weight lifting, jump they was looser, and they was losing a big time. One day Marshal Mammont was passing by, on his way to Rijeka and he saw the competition. After soldiers was defeated with so much easy, he give the order to all soldiers and officers must to improve they physical conditions. That was, at least was said, first beginning of modern day military calisthenics.

And so, salt production start finally by firing the fires under big salt pots which, Grandpa and man of the Family have brought by Sea on big leuts (fishing boats with oars). Trip have taken almost a week. But French's was paying all expenses so it was not as hard. Children was filling the pots to overflow and once was full, they keep fire going strong and all the time. Day and night, fires was burning, kids, children, young woman and old woman, every body was participating in this new venture of Grandpa. It was something new, unusual entertaining and most of children did not take this as work. Rather that was welcome change in boredom of every day work and so shmrika (local evergreen) was burning with greasy, thick smoking fire, and being of high calories wood was fast increasing the temperature in pots. Grandpa have made of wood, big cooking spoons which was used to stir the salty water in pots. How water evaporated, more sea water was

poured in pots and boiling continue. After hours of cooking, brine was getting thicker and thicker. Then with deep large spoons, adults start to skim the brine of salt. Salt was stored in bags, close to fire to additionally evaporate the water. After few days Colonel arrived and inspected, and smoke from fires soon chase him away. He was satisfied wit beginning of production and did not bother to wait how much salt they will make first day.

Grandma was cooking food at home for a salt workers and young man will go home with traljas (wooden stretchers) and bring the meal to the shore. There all will eat and wash the utensils in the Sea. They have established the shifts, so some was taking care about production others was sound asleep. Grandpa was soon working as Inspector, and always was on the road. When he was told to Colonel do not make daily visits, he order the few youngsters to "save" some salt for a family needs. And from then, for a ten bags for French's one bag was for a Family.

Soon people from Mountain and backlands was coming to a village and trade for a salt. Salt was in that times very expensive, especially for a people from backlands which did not have access to a Sea water. Animals need salt more than humans, which always can get some . Grandpa have all Family money and soon Family start purchasing the land as far a Posedarje, Jasenice, Novigrad, Drachevac and some land was purchased very close to town of Zadar. Soon family property have grown so big, to people have hard time remembering

what was where and what must to be done. Autumn was coming to an end and soon will be winter. French's was intending to continue building the road in the winter. Grandpa have give them warning to North wind Bura is so strong sometime to will blow people in the Sea. But they did not heed his warnings. Finally one day, two workers was blown away, and get all bitten up in shallow water. After that French's stop the construction. Production of salt continue and family that winter made good, very good. Grandpa one day saddle the horse and ride somewhere. It was a week before he have returned. He did not say no body nothing. It was not his duty to said anything to any body. He was the head of the Family and what he decided, it was that way.

Salt was cooked day and night. One weekend Grandpa come around and find to nobody have picked up salt. He ask the boy on salt works when last time they have seen Colonel, and answer was not to his liking. So he saddle up the horse and start toward the road construction sight under the Starigrad and Paklenica, riding most of the day. On road side he find nobody working. French troops was no place in sight. This is strange, he thought, and continue riding. Workers was sitting down, smoking cigarettes, talking or eating. When he asked about the French's whereabouts nobody knew right answer.

So he continue riding and two days after he fine himself in Senj, but in headquarters for Primorje also no French was in sight. Town folks did not know answers on his questions.

This night he slept in livery stable and early in the morning he turn horse around, and start on the way home. On construction site, he explain the workers to is nobody around who will pay them. In addition he said to they have come to work on his honor and word. He can not let them go just like that. He invite them to come to Rovanjska and he will give them amount of salt to take home for earned wages if they agree. Naturally anything is better than perspective of going home with nothing. Salt was worth a lot, and Grandpa open his ledger and pay them out. Some did not have means to take salt home. They make deal to Grandpa will lent them mules and donkeys which they will deliver back with firewood load for service. All agree to it there was no writing of papers. Grandpa knew each man personally and where was his house. Any way, it was no way to they will not do what was said. It will be same as horse thievery, and broken word of honor will destroy particular person in short period of time. So all youngsters was saddling the cargo saddles on all Family animals. Soon they was on the way. Silence fall on the Rovanjska first time in many months, everybody in family did not have nothing to do, but little house chores which was lagging behind. Week after, Rovanjska was already in old way. Life was going on familiar way. Kids was playing. Grown ups was performing their duties. Life was good.

  1. HONOR, WORD AND FAMILY

Everyday was spend in play and work and nobody ever think about how hard life is because better was not known and elders was always working for young ones will accept the work as something natural what's just here, and have to be done. Everybody was taught one simple reason and very early in to the life: "Who don't work-don't eat" so everybody have work, the best they know and can and all was fine. Youngsters will inherit the close of elders, those younger, shoes of the elders, which have overgrown them, and oldest ones which did not leave house no more will wear all that what was no more to be used in every day work but was still good enough to be used around the house. Sometime the all generations of a one family will wear the same jacket or pants for a years before was too old for anything else than like rugs for covering of the hole on somebody pants or sleeves. In the summer little kids will run around but naked and enjoy the hot rays of a summer sun on the skin, after while so tanned to was hard to say if it was bunch of local kids or somebody dumped all bunch of children from Arabia. And nobody minded. This was the way how all grow up and clothing was to precious and also too fast overgrown to parents will waste time and money in effort to cover them up. All kids was healthy, slim and trim, no fat on they body to be found. Play and work will come all tighter and no one will ever think to they children was too young to work. As grandparents used to said: "You

are old enough to run around, You are old enough to work what you can". So, there was everyday duties, bring the firewood, pick up the wood chips, clean the yard, clean after the animals, feed the dogs, water the horses and this and that, and all was coming just natural. From very young age children will learn to only if one work, it will be rewarded. Nobody ever try to get something for nothing and all have learn to only team work paid off. Nobody have to ask for a hand, because always was couple of willing hands around. Trade was learned in play and no kids ever thought about learning. That was something unknown. You will after a while just know what to do, how to do, when to do and why to do. And that was not hard. Nothing was ever hard. Elders in they sixties or seventies will never said to something is hard or heavy, they will just one day announce to particular job is not for them any more and leader of a family will assign some of come to age kids, to do that chore from now on. And that was normal and nobody will question. Anyway, elders work was never questioned or doubted. It was known to each man is worthy as much as his work and great pride was taken to nobody lie, or said wrong on somebody else. If you borrow something and said you will return on particular day and time, that was worthy more than all papers of the world.

Grandpa used to said: "Only people which know in advance to they can not do it, or know to they don't have intention to respect they word, will make paper. Honest people do not

    need papers and witnesses".

So many time town people will sign paper and not honored, but if people from the village said so, this was as carved in the stone and if have to be, live stock will be sold, or long journey made to honor the word given to somebody. It was never, ever, even in afterthought to somebody from a village can not tell the truth. Lie was the no- no word and somebody who lie will not survive in the society with so high moral standards. Also gendarmes never show in to the houses by business. They know to family do care about its honor. So they will come and eat, and relax under almond trees in the front yard and be gone by their business. Filip remember once as kid he was still awake when one of his uncles come home from town and all elders man have congregate in to the kitchen, door was shut tight. He was pretending to he is asleep so nobody did touch him. Uncle was telling the story how in the town he was accused of thievery, so he have to run.

Grandpa ask him only once, and only on question: "Did you do what they accuse you for?.

Uncle try to said something, but one sight in grandpa gray eyes have let him know to he was read as book and, nodded, whispering admittance: "Yes father I did it".

After that they told him to go get the water from rain catchment tank and come back. When he left the Grandpa look ling and hard on all man of the family and said quietly: "I did have son, I do not have son no more. Our family is in jeopardy to get stained name so

you all know what is my decision. No member of my family was ever on the court and will not be as long as I am alive."

Uncle come back and without anyone say the word he knew. His head hang deeper to his chest and shoulders hang down. Like some superior power have taken all living power out of his body. Slowly he stand up face the father, bend down, and get in hold of his hind, kissed lightly and said: "Thank you father".

He knew what coming, and accepted, at the same time he was afraid to his father will not make decision and he will have to be arrested and lead by foot back in town, stand the trial and finish in jail. He was not able to spend time behind the bars. The prospect of the bars and locked doors was something he can not take. All man got up on their feet, and in silent column follow him through the door. No word was said, no woman was called, not ever his mom.

Column left the front yard and take the path toward the bay. After that, silence in the kitchen really put Filip asleep. Next morning when he wake up, grandma was silently crying, tears was running down her soft face in fast tracks, but she did not brake or part of the duty. That fatal morning they found the uncle in the bay, drown still holding in his clutched hand bottle which smelled on home made figs brandy. Grandpa have said to all in the family to uncle must to come home late last night from town and start drinking, decide

to go for a swim and drown. And that was it. No inspector, detective or gendarme from the town will question grandpa's word. They knew to Uncle did it. We knew to Uncle did it. And all was happy on they own way to Uncle do not have to go and stand trial. It will be waste of tax money, it will destroy the family honor. That will destroy Grandpa which will have to march in to the town to a trial and listen how his son was bad, rotten etc….

Brothers have bring the uncle on Tralje, wooden device made of two long poles bridged with several short ones across home. Grandma was there, wash him out, pull the bottle from his dead hand. Two younger woman help her change his clothing. She kissed his cold forehead once for a last time. Plain pain wood box was brought in, he was laid in it, Grandpa hammered the nails in still soft and fresh wood. No prayer was made publicly. Everybody pray for themselves. Grave was dig outside the fence of the family graveyard. People which commit suicide and not lay in the same holly ground with rest of the population. He was lowered in the grave. Dirt, dully bumped to a box and it was all over. Uncles name was never mentioned in the family again. Few days after, grandpa make simple marker for the grave which said to he was found drown, and year of birth and death. And that was it. No fuss, no hush, he was born, he liver the worthless life, he died.

Few days after Gendarmes have come and ask to have a drink. Grandpa make sure to they have the best. He seat down with them and light the pipe. After a while Sergeant of

gendarmes ask Grandpa very politely did he have seen his son lately? Grandpa slowly bow his head and told them to couple of days prior they arrival they just buried him. Then he take them to a cemetery and show them a fresh grave. Sergeant ask to talk with Grandma, but Grandpa refuses on the grounds to she is naturally very upset and to that will not be necessary. Sergeant make mellow effort in front on his man to like, persuade Grandpa to a further talks and give up after that effort.

They was sitting in silence for awhile. Grandpa did not offer no more drink. He did not offer the food. So gendarmes get up, shake hands with grandpa and leave in single file column with rifles over the shoulders and bayonets hanging from the belts and biting they left thighs in ritam of march. No word have been spoken for a while. Than, one of younger gendarme ask the Sergeant: "How come no people from this villages was ever arrested, jailed or other vice processed?" Making sure to it is no unwanted ears around his reply was short and stern. "This people do not need judge, do not need us, do not need advocate and lawyers. They were taking care about themselves before, and they will in the future. This people do know justice and have better judges than Government ever will. Now shut up and do not ask stupid questions any more or else."

  2. FRENCH ROAD CONSTRUCTION

When some years back Marshall Marmmont's troops pour in Dalmacija, it was refreshing. Where was no other ways than goats paths, Napoleon have ordered to build the highways of that time. Where were highways he ordered to be renewed and reinforced, where was ports he ordered to be designed new and enlarged. Napoleon and his Marshal Marmmont did not order that because they love Dalmatians. He order that in knowledge, to sooner than lather he will ned means of quick transportation of troops back and forth. But for a time bean most of the Dalmatian man have find the job on construction of the highway's and tunnels on they path. At the same time they was acquiring new knowledge. How to use new explosives which French have developed for a Military purposes How to use and design new tools needed for a development of different tasks. They was building on equal distances rain catchment's, large enough to big military formations have enough when they pass by. They was installing the highway signs with distance chiseled in (as Romans did long time ago), distances will tell the traveler how far is to next town or how far he was from the town he just come from.

Grandpa have sign up with most of the family man for this jobs. Far sighted as always he decided to will make good to participate, learn and make some money if that can be done. So some man was working on stone carving, others in mason division, Filip was still in the

Velebit taking care of that part of Family business, Grandpa was assigned for a foreman position. That did not come just out from the blue. Marmmont's people have make they're intelligence ground work in advance, and they knew who is who, and where they have to call upon, to task be done with less effort. What make they work more easy was the different approach. In the time when Venetia have rule the Dalmacija, all was done by force. So Napoleon assigned Marshal Marmmont to use different tactics. So after thinking and studying for a while, he decided to will be the best to use approach of benefactor. And he implement the wide open enrollment in what he called Public works. Who enroll will have decent pay, decent food and decent barracks for a that time. Also he have number of Scientists of different kind with him. There was Geometers, Surveyors, Land book makers for a Land management, Archeologists and so forth and so forth. Most of the people in Dalmacija have respect for a French's grow even bigger when they start paying for a land they needed for a projects. People did not see them as intruders any more but for a Government of prosperity.

And Adriatic highway start to advance in quick pace. In less than few years major ground works have been done. Finishing touches was been added to the route. Where was ravines and local people said to flash floods was rampant, engineer will construct aquaducts, bridges or underpasses for a water. Where was danger of strong Bura winds, walls was

build to protect the travelers on the highway. Edges of the road was build of chiseled stone, where was needed to elevate road, skarpa was build of chiseled stone and build under 45 to 75 degree angle to support the road on the top. On that way road was in one level which did not have large up hills and down hills. Road was build to support a military six man column one way, or two military carts in opposite ways. This was revolution. Where people before must to spend days traveling paths, not was road in use which make all this short and more pleasant.

When French's start on the border with Italy, they pass through Istra peninsula and around it , they come to Port of Pula on they way, build the military outpost, arrived in Port of Rijeda, continue down the coast, pass the Port of Senj and in just very short time they was building near Rovanjska. From Rovanjska road was split in two major directions. One across the mountain and inland to the North, other continue toward the Port of Zadar, and down the coast to Port's of Sibenik, Split and Dubrovnik…

Making of a Z tuna seiner

It was days since last time I have posted something. Well here is something , some of us experienced and some never took to hart. When I was in Jurong in Singapoore in Singmarine , I thought to it is no worst place for one human to be. Next to us was one of at that time Soviet Union Zverey boat or as we will translate boat that cary hunters for snow fox, sea mamals and such animals hunting on ice bergs.
We were living in hotel, having meals there and Ruskis were staying on their ship in dry dock. We have AC in the kabin, they didnt.
Whom ewer has been in tropics he knows how hot Singapore can be.
Hot, humid, almost permanent overcast and sun under the clouds. One day they come on our ship and we give them the tour.
First thing they saw was chapel in passage . They asked:" Is it realy there , and all can used freely?" Ve offered them to pray, and were about to leave. Others sayd at that time to they must ask for permission from political officer.
But enough about this place. I dont know in which shipyard she was repaired but you mut know after you see pictures.

Old fishermans & way of life dont die- they just fade away

This is a picture of a Man. Old Man with few of his friends from Dalmatian Islands and Coast long ago started fishing at Pacific from Peru, Panama to San Diego. Boats were small. Nets were mended of cotton and tarred with tar. Power block haven't been invented yet. This will go to the early part of twentieth Century and also Dalmatian Man Mr. Puretich. He was fisherman too and he was getting tired seining by hand. If at that time one set is made , it was good day to bring the net back on the stern. This was done in order: first you make bunch and braille fish on the deck. Than, all the net have to go by double up and down until very first part is properly set at stern and rope with lead weights and rings stored properly. This will last double, single, double single until bunch was on the top and rope called caldofero pulled through the rings. Mind you , seining winch wasn't invented yet. Winch in use has one single drum and one double drum. Dangerous job, mind you. Pursing was done by hand . net was recovered by single and double. No joker's on the net. But that people persevere. Italians, Primotas, Spaniards from San Pedro and San Diego were in that job too. That was the way they lived at home and that's the way of living they knew. Changes were coming slowly. Cotton nets were replaced by nylon. Two manual drums winches replaced by three drum independently driven winches, Puretich Power block was invented. That was the days when boats didn't have air conditioning, food refrigerators but ice boxes. No checks and contracts. It was enough if Old Man come and either ask or promise. That was the time when man was worthy as much as his word was strong. And all knew to their word is worth gold.
I wonder how many of Old timers that remember that times are still around.

Thames passes by so fast and kids grow up. Old man have sons and one was good in business and other one was good as Port engineer. First one was Lawrence Zuanich and second was John Zuanich. They continue to build company and at beginning was all going nicely and fine. Old Man was around and give advice, new boats were built, new seiners acquired, purchased from other owners that decided to give up. On the end fleet was made from 13 ships for names check one of previous blogs.
Lawrence is someplace in Peru, in real estate business.I also heard to he has beer brewery in Lima but I cant confirm that.

John was always busy in Port and one or two of seiners in the shipyard. Always willing to listen to good ideas. Last I heard he is in Hawaii and work for shipyard, starting all again in life.

This is Lawrence now , someplace in Peru. This picture make me think where is his wife Yolanda. She was young, smart , conservative and good family caretaker.

This is a Big Z in Apra Harbor on Guam in early ninety's.Z company was brought to its knees from multiple reasons that still killing seiner owners.
As per some people whom say to Lawrence become greedy with the time, as per others tuna market start crushing and Z Company get ower extended and defaulted. Once that happen all credits faucets were gone dry, US National Marine Fisheries pull the plug and repo the mortgaged vessels. This is the reason and I am most inclined to belived was intention to build Canery in Papua New Guinea. Rumors say to bosses of Star Kist , and other canneries at that time still USA owned, told Lawrence to leave cannery busyness to them and if he need money for more ships they will let him have. This same rumors say to he rejected and price of fish start to drop for a continuous two years and he was forced in bankruptcy.
Third reason for possible failure was DEA discovery of cocaine smuggling in tuna seiners. I was witness for few searches in Apra Harbor with K9 units. Nothing was found as we were fishing good and fast, will be returning in Guam so fast to sometime we waited for reefers to come and take fish.
Final blow was when all money run out. Vessels were arrested every where by Marshals and hold by Admiralty Law Attorneys with crew on them until solutions were found or vessel was sold or taken back to San Diego and sold there. Leaving mostly to South American fleets. While we were taking care of this beautiful ships, they were ranked as best up kept fleet in private hands in the World.
I have sad opportunity to see some of the now- I believe to that will put tears in Old Man eye, some of them become just plain rust buckets.
But that is the way of today World. That remind me of General Mac Arthur last speech in West Point, only I will rephrase the as:" Old fisherman and way of life don't die, they just fade away."

Some pictures from the past

This is pictorial from one that's gone in Davy Jones locker. Built as one of biggest of her time she was the pride and glory of San Diego fisherman of Dalmatian ancestry, when purchased. She was build as Apollo and she sunk as Adriatic Sea. After batting the Oceans for a years at the time, she will be send in the ship yard where all will be pulled out. I am not sure but its looklike as Jurong Singmarine Shipyard dry dock in Singapore.
After entering dry dock all water will be pumped out , back in ocean and she will lay supported by wooden blocks high and dry. At that time anchor will be payed out and all anchor chain , complete will be send to send blasting and couple of poor bastards will be send in chain locker to chip the roost away.
That's one of dirtiest jobs in shipyard.

At same time sand blasting crew will attack with sand blasters from all sides and eliminate all sea growth and barnacles that catch for the hull in paste years. That is a nasty job and one must have full body protection to do that.

Hydraulic system was updated and hoses replaced. This upgrade allows for faster pursing of the cables and speed with this one has increased from one and a half hour to 45 minutes only. New hydraulic was also requiring new piping as well.

Deck cranes were unloaded and send in to the shop for complete dismantling and repair of hydraulic rams and seal, as well as all fittings. Special care was taken to all crimp on fittings were enclosed in grease tape to protect from further corrosion.

Quick release hooks on the bow of the skiff were replaced for bigger and stronger one.

Cooling piping was disassembled and send blasted inside and out, gauged and replaced if needed.

Anchor winch was also renovated, fixed, painted, base bolts replaced and installed ready to accept freshly blasted and painted anchor chain and anchor.

Hydraulic motor drive require a lots of space and was squeezed in some empty spaces. This did not allowed lots of space for maintenance.

Pneumatic clutch was overhauled also.

She was the beauty with twin screws that were cleaned up .

Skiff stern , slides and edges were reinforced and welded as this place get abused very harshly.

Brine system was overhauled and new sections installed.

New rubber pedros were inserted in piping as to prevent rupture during unloading wit Seal bombs in use.

Heat exchangers were open and cleaned thoroughly.

In the evening she sails in sunset.

It is enough of this mess , lets go fishing, this place is good to make sane man crazy.

Dry dock filling up.

In Guam under company office getting ready to sail again.

To all whom build her and/or have any connection wit her:

Last I heard to she pull her own shaft out with pursing winch and sunk someplace South West of Papua New Guinea.
Also story of her final trip will be appreciated.
